The boundary between the maxillary and mandibular segments is unaffected in Df(1)XR14 embryos.

Mutant larvae lack mouth hooks, cirri, dental sclerites and the H-piece. The median tooth is faint and the lateral process is shortened. Occasionally, small, partially sclerotised structures that may be remnants of the mouth hooks and one or two cirri-like structures are seen. The antennal sense organ is not usually seen.
