ey2 heterozygotes do not exhibit any size alterations or roughness in eyes when compared to control adults.
ey2 mutants have a small eye disc and show a complete loss of the retina.
There is severe apoptosis in the early third instar larval eye disc in ey2 mutants.
Small, antenna-like outgrowths are seen in place of eyes in a small percentage of ey2/ey2 eyScer\UAS.ΔHD Scer\GAL4ey.PH flies.
Mutant adults exhibit a variable eye phenotype.
Homozygotes show 45% lethality. Eyes are reduced in size in homozygotes; 71% have eyes that are 0-25% of wild-type size, 23% have eyes that are 25-50% of wild-type size, 6% have eyes that are 50-75% of wild-type size and 0% have eyes that are 75-100% of wild-type size. Homozygotes have no overt defects in the mushroom body or central complex. 100% of ey2/eyD1Da and ey2/eyJD flies have eyes which are 75-100% of wild-type size and they have no overt defects in the mushroom body or central complex.
Eye is reduced in size.
Expression of eyScer\UAS.ΔHD when driven by Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 in a ey2 background leads to ectopic eyes.
Homozygous adults have no apparent mushroom body phenotype. The eyes are variably reduced.
Medial lobes of the mushroom body are fused in about 35% of second instar larvae. Embryonic pattern of mushroom body neuroblasts is apparently normal.
Mutant phenotype is variable: 3% of flies show a wild type eye. In combination with eymEYE-ey, 55% show almost wild type-sized eyes. The anlagen of the eye are formed normally in mutant embryos, but by the late third instar larva the eye portion (though not the antennal portion) of the eye-antennal disc is severely reduced. Ommatidial cluster development fails. Eye discs show massive cell death, similar to the phenotype for so1 and eya1.
Displays locomotor activity rhythm with an approximately 24h period.
Flies have a variable number of facets on one or both sides. The reduction in the medulla of the optic lobe in the adult is most severe in the distal region.
Rudimentary compound eyes.
eye size relative to that of wild type: .25-.50 Eye reduced to one-half to one-fourth wild-type area with relatively little variability. Cephalic complex smaller than wild type 25 hr after hatching from egg at 27oC; subsequent growth rate same as wild type (Medvedev, 1935a; 1935b; Steinberg, 1944). RK1.

The ectopic eyes seen in flies in which Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 drives expression from toyScer\UAS.cCa, toyΔHD.Scer\UAS or Mmus\Pax6Scer\UAS.cHa are not suppressed by ey2/ey2.
Expression of NICN.Scer\UAS driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PH in a ey2 background, produced flies with reduced eyes. About 15% of these flies had both a reduced original and a reduced ectopic eye. In addition, ectopic antennae were seen in about 1/4 of these flies.
Ectopic eyes are still produced if OptixScer\UAS.cSa is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 in an ey2 background. The efficiency of occurrence of ectopic eyes is not changed from when OptixScer\UAS.cSa is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 in a wild-type background, but the frequency of induction of extra ocelli is increased.
ey2 blocks the formation of ectopic eyes caused by toyScer\UAS.cCa, Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1.
Ectopic eyes are not produced when eyaScer\UAS.cPa and soScer\UAS.cPa are coexpressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 in an ey2 background, although growth alterations and patches of red pigment cells on the legs are still seen.
In the presence of Opt mutations, ey2 flies exhibit protrusions of wing tissue from the region of the eye; development is normal at 17oC, but homeotic transformation is observed at 29oC; the temperature-sensitive period is during the second larval instar. Protrusions from the anterior portion of the eye have the triple row of bristles characteristic of the anterior wing margin; the fronto-orbital region of the head produces bristles with bracts characteristic of the costa in the proximal wing.
In ey2 mutant eye-antennal discs that contain clones of cells expressing BacA\p35Scer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI, either no endogenous eyes form, or a partial eye forms (as scored by expression of gl) in the ventral region.
In ey2/ey2 BacA\p35Scer\UAS.cHa; Scer\GAL4ey.PH third instar larvae, the eye portion of the eye-antennal disc is replaced by a duplication of the antennal half of the disc. The resulting adults have an extra antenna in place of each eye. This ectopic antenna phenotype is suppressed by eyScer\UAS.ΔPD, which does not rescue eye development. In contrast eyScer\UAS.ΔHD can both rescue eye development and suppress ectopic antenna formation, although this suppression is incompletely penetrant for both aspects of the phenotype.
ey2 is rescued by eyΔHD.UAS/Scer\GAL4ey.PH
ey2 is not rescued by eyΔPD.UAS/Scer\GAL4ey.PH
