Viable at 17oC and 22oC, but lethal at 29oC. Effective lethal phase at 29oC is about 12 hr after pupation. Temperature-sensitive period for lethality begins midway through the third larval instar and ends around pupation. At 22oC the eye color of males is obviously mutant, whereas homozygous females are virtually indistinguishable from wild type. At 17oC the eye color of males and females is wild-type. Quantity of pteridines in the eye, testes and Malpighian tubules are altered at 29oC. Temperature-sensitive period for pigment production in the Malpighian tubules occurs in the egg and first instar larva, and for the eyes and testes after pupation. For eyes the temperature sensitive period begins 52-56 hr after pupation. The effect in the eyes is autonomous. For testes the temperature sensitive period begins 56-60 hr after pupation.
