ry2/T(3;4)ryps1149 or ry2/In(3R)ryps11136 heterozygotes have ry- eye colour when reared on low levels of the xanthine dehydrogenase inhibitor HPP and wild-type eye colour on standard medium. They are purine sensitive.
Eye colour: reddish brown. Ocellus colour: approximately wild-type. Malpighian tubule colour: slightly lighter than wild-type. Testis colour: wild-type. Malpighian tubules are shortened and malformed, containing yellow to orange-coloured globular inclusions in the lumen. Viable at 18oC, subvital-semilethal in late pupae and adults at 25oC. Nonautonomous with respect to the amount of red eye pigments and the appearance of isoxanthopterine in ry2 transplants, and after implantation of ry+ fat bodies, Malpighian tubules and eye discs in ry2 hosts. Wild-type eyes as transplants in ry2 hosts form only the reduced amount of eye pigment characteristic of the mutant ry2 host.
