Su(var)2052/+ adult flies do not have melanotic masses.

Su(var)2052 flies show a disruption of the heterochromatic silencing of the P{T1} reporter in line P{T1}T190-177 and of the P{T1(-FRT)} reporter in line P{T1(-FRT)}T190-177.

Su(var)2052/Df(2L)TE29Aa-11 and Su(var)2052/Su(var)2054 mutant third instar larvae have melanotic nodules found in the lymph glands. In Su(var)2052/Df(2L)TE29Aa-11 larvae, the melanotic nodules are surrounded by lamellocytes.

Su(var)2052/Su(var)2055 larvae show an extreme enlargement of the ring gland due to an increase in size of the prothoracic gland cells. The gastric caecae in these larvae are shorter and wider than normal and pair of the caecae are often fused.

The larval imaginal discs of Su(var)2055/Su(var)2052 mutants are similar to wild-type imaginal discs. Telomeres in Su(var)2052 heterozygous strains are elongated with respect to the wild-type phenotype.

Heterozygotes show no effect on crossing over between kni and pp.

Su(var)2052 suppresses Position Effect Variegation of w seen in P{hsp26-pt-T}39C-72, an insertion of P{hsp26-pt-T} into the 4th chromosome telomeric region. Su(var)2052 suppresses Position Effect Variegation of Ecol\lacZ seen in P{70ZT(-194/+84)CCCA}2.7, an insertion of P{70ZT(-194/+84)CCCA} into the 4th chromosome telomeric region.

Suppresses transinactivation of bw caused by Tp(2;2)bw-DX7.

Suppresses PEV of eye color caused by insertions of P{hsp26-pt-T} that otherwise show PEV. The chromatin structure of P{hsp26-pt-T}118E-10 is more accessible to XbaI in a Su(var)2052 mutant (accessibility 50%) than in Su(var)205+ (accessibility 9%).

Neuroblasts in the brain of Su(var)2052/Su(var)2055 larvae show normal metaphase configurations.

Suppresses the position effect variegation at the w locus caused by In(1)wm4 and suppresses the position effect variegation at the bw locus caused by In(2R)bwVDe2 and Byron. Also suppresses the position effect variegation of w seen in the P{wAR}41A insertion.

Homozygous embryos are found to be mostly devoid of intact nuclei. Any remaining nuclei have defects in chromosome segregation and abnormal morphology (chromatin bridges, chromosome lagging during anaphase and under- or over-condensed nuclei). Mitotic synchrony is lost in a high proportion of embryos and defective nuclei are seen beneath the normal plane of nuclei, they appear to be falling into the interior of the embryo.

Dominant suppressor of variegation.

A small percentage (2%) of Su(var)2052/+;XNP3/+ flies have melanotic masses; Su(var)2052/ADD1NP1240 flies do not have melanotic masses; Su(var)2052/ADD1NP1240;XNP3/+ flies have melanotic masses (14%).

In progeny from Su(var)2052 heterozygous females crossed to SxlfP7B0/Y males, female viability is reduced.

In progeny from Su(var)2052 heterozygous females crossed to Sxlf1/Y males, female viability is reduced.

When P{P-Sal}89D is present, the w gene of the P{lacW}ciDplac insertion variegates, resulting (in a w- background) in an eye that is mostly white with a few patches of red ommatidia. This P-element-dependent silencing of P{lacW}ciDplac is dominantly suppressed by Su(var)2052.

Has no effect on the frequency of X-Y chromosome nondisjunction seen in Df(1)X-1-53B males.

The V26M mutation, which disrupts the gene silencing function of Su(var)205, destabilizes the His3-binding interface and abolishes methyl K-9 His3 tail binding.

The presence of Su(var)2052 suppresses position effect variegation (PEV) of lines with insertions in centromeric regions or in the fourth chromosome. Insertions near the telomeres 2L, 2R or 3R show no suppression.
