When homozygous clones are made that occupy most of the distal leg, mutant animals exhibit severe fusion and truncation of the tarsus. Clones that only span inter-tarsomere joints appear normal. Almost all clones that result in observable phenotypes span the tibia/t1 boundary and within these clones there is considerable variation in the number of tarsomere joints affected.

Homozygous embryos exhibit the 'tail-up' phenotype and defects in the mandible and maxilla. Hindgut is drastically reduced, proventriculus is absent. Lateralgraten is shortened and the ventral arm reduced in bowl¹/bowl² transheterozygotes.
