Dsim\Lhrunspecified can rescue the sterility of hybrid female progeny of D.melanogaster females crossed to D.simulans males.

Hybrid daughters from a cross of D.melanogaster females to D.simulans males are poorly viable at high temperatures (29o). This female lethality is suppressed by D.simulans Dsim\Lhrunspecified. Hybrid males from a cross of D.melanogaster females to D.simulans males are not viable. This male lethality is fully rescued at 18oC and 25oC and poorly rescued at 29oC by D.simulans Dsim\Lhrunspecified. The rescuing activity of D.simulans Dsim\Lhrunspecified is strongly suppressed by D.melanogaster Dp(1;2)v+75d. D.melanogaster Dp(1;2)v+75d has no significant effect on hybrid female viability in crosses of D.melanogaster females to D.simulans Dsim\Lhrunspecified males, suggesting that D.simulans Dsim\Lhrunspecified suppresses the deleterious effect of Dp(1;2)v+75d normally seen in female hybrids.

Dsim\Lhrunspecified rescues the viability of hybrid males derived from a cross between D.simulans males and D.melanogaster females.

Dsim\Lhrunspecified rescues D.melanogaster/D.simulans hybrid males (derived from a cross of D.melanogaster females to D.simulans males) that would normally be inviable. Dsim\Lhrunspecified allows the recovery of significantly more D.melanogaster/D.simulans hybrid males carrying Dp(1;2)v+75d and derived from a cross of D.melanogaster attached-X females to D.simulans males than in controls.

The sex ratios of progeny from a cross of D.simulans Dsim\Lhrunspecified males to D.melanogaster prod+ or produnspecified/+ females are not significantly different from 0.5 or from each other.

Dsim\Lhrunspecified rescues hybrid males from a cross between D.melanogaster mit1 females and Dsim\Lhrunspecified males. X/O clones are recovered on the head and thorax of the hybrid flies and are larger than the clones produced in a cross between D.melanogaster mit1 females and Dsim\Lhr+ males.

Dsim\Lhrunspecified does not suppress the lethality of recombinant hybrid clones in D.melanogaster/D.simulans hybrid females.

The ability of Dsim\Lhrunspecified to rescue the hybrid lethality of males derived from a cross of D.melanogaster females to D.simulans males is enhanced if the D.melanogaster females carry one copy of Df(3R)e1025-14, Df(3R)3-4 or Df(3R)kar-Sz12, and is suppressed if the D.melanogaster females carry one copy of Df(2R)AA21.

The D.simulans derived polytene X chromosome has a bloated and diffuse appearance in the male hybrid progeny of a cross between attached X D.melanogaster females and Dsim\Lhrunspecified D.simulans males.

X[[mel]]/X[[sim]]; trahs.PM hybrids are recovered in crosses of D. melanogaster females to D. simulans males. X[[mel]]/Y[[sim]]; trahs.PM hybrids are not recovered in these crosses. X[[mel]]/Y[[sim]]; trahs.PM phenotypically female hybrids are recovered if the D. simulans male parent is carrying Dsim\Lhrunspecified.
