Flies expressing soUAS.cPa under the control of either Scer\GAL4GMR.PU or Scer\GAL4ey.PU have small, rough eyes.

Eyes expressing soScer\UAS.cPa driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PU are smaller than controls.

Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH or Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 results in flies with smaller eyes than normal (which contain fewer facets than wild-type eyes). The regular arrangement of facets is lost in these eyes.

Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 does not result in ectopic eye formation.

Ectopic expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 has little or no effect on antennal, wing or leg disc development.

Co-expression of eyaScer\UAS.cUa together with soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act.PU in somatic clones in the brain optic lobes confers outer proliferation centre (OPC)-like identity to the p-IPC (proximal inner proliferation centre - gives rise to migratory progenitors) and induces their conversion to neuroblasts.

Clones of soScer\UAS.cPa; eyaScer\UAS.cPa; Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP cells in the testes do not induce precocious spermatocyte development.

When dppScer\UAS.cSa, eyaScer\UAS.cPa and eyScer\UAS.cHa are driven by Scer\GAL430A, photoreceptor differentiation is induced in both compartments of the wing disc. The addition of soScer\UAS.cPa increases the penetrance of this phenotype. The addition of soScer\UAS.cPa and eyaScer\UAS.cPa (driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PB) to animals with smoD16 clones in the eye disc has no effect on the photoreceptor differentiation phenotype seen in eye discs. The delayed progression of the morphogenetic furrow is also not affected. The addition of dppScer\UAS.cSa and eyaScer\UAS.cPa (driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PB) to animals with smoD16 clones in the eye disc, fully suppresses photoreceptor differentiation phenotype seen in eye discs. The delayed progression of the morphogenetic furrow is also rescued. If soScer\UAS.cPa is also added, posterior margin clones are still rescued, although ectopic anterior furrows are induced with high frequency. The addition of soScer\UAS.cPa and dppScer\UAS.cSa (driven by Scer\GAL4ey.PB) to animals with smoD16 clones in the eye disc has no effect on the photoreceptor differentiation phenotype seen in eye discs.

Expression of eyaScer\UAS.cBa and soScer\UAS.cPa driven by Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 causes ectopic retinal development, leading to the eventual formation of ectopic compound eyes in the adult.

Co-expression of eyaScer\UAS.cBa and soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 results in ectopic eye tissue at many sites, including the antenna, legs and wings. Co-expression of eyaE7.Scer\UAS and soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 results in ectopic retinal tissue in 19% of cases. The ectopic retinal tissue consists of discernible ommatidia and is limited to the antennal region. Abnormal leg development is seen in 100% of cases, and in 12% of cases a reduced eye phenotype is seen. Co-expression of eyaE11.Scer\UAS and soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 results in ectopic retinal tissue in 51% of cases. The ectopic retinal tissue is limited to specks of pigment on the tips of the antenna. Abnormal leg development is seen in 100% of cases.

The dppd-blk small eye phenotype is enhanced by soScer\UAS.cPa expressed under the control of either Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 or Scer\GAL4ey.PH, which often results in a complete lack of eye development.

Ectopic eyes are produced at a frequency of 60% if eyaScer\UAS.cBa and soScer\UAS.cPa are coexpressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1.

Coexpression of both eyaScer\UAS.cPa and soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 results in a dramatic increase in the development of eye tissue in antennal discs compared to expression of eyaScer\UAS.cPa alone under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1. This tissue develops into adult eye structures. There is also an increase in the frequency and size of red pigmented patches on the wings and legs. Ectopic eyes are not produced when eyaScer\UAS.cPa and soScer\UAS.cPa are coexpressed under the control of Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 in an ey2 background, although growth alterations and patches of red pigment cells on the legs are still seen.

Comments

Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4so.10 or Scer\GAL4so.10.TOYmt rescues the missing eyes of so1 animals, but not the ocelli. Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4so.10.EY.TOYmt.1.2.5 only partially rescues the missing eyes of so1 animals; almost 100% of the flies have a strongly reduced eye on one side of the head and no eye on the other side. Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4so.7 fully rescues the missing eyes of so1 animals, and partially rescues the ocelli. Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4so.7.EY.TOYmt.1.2.5 does not rescue the missing eyes of so1 animals but rescues the ocelli. Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4so.7.TOYmt rescues the missing eyes of so1 animals but does not rescue the ocelli. Expression of soScer\UAS.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4so.7.EY+TOYmt.1-5 does not rescue the missing eyes or ocelli of so1 animals.

The lack of Bolwig's organ neurons seen in so3 embryos is partially rescued by soScer\UAS.cPa expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4h-1J3.
