An elav promoter regulates expression of a GAL4(DBD)::Zip- hemidriver (component of the 'Split GAL4' system, contains the GAL4 DNA-binding domain). An internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) from the Ubx gene followed by DsRed(Unk) coding sequence is present downstream of the hemidriver sequence, but this is not expressed in the nervous system.

Of 10 Scer\GAL4DBD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipRREEL lines made, only the P{elav-GAL4.DBD}H9 line is viable when crossed to the Hsim\VP16AD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipEERRL,T:SV40\nls2 hemidriver.
The T:Disc\RFP tag is not expressed from this construct.
When Scer\GAL4AD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipEERRL,T:SV40\nls2 and Scer\GAL4DBD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipRREEL are expressed together in the same cell, they function as a complete GAL4 driver. Hsim\VP16AD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipEERRL,T:SV40\nls2 and Scer\GAL4DBD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipRREEL also function together as a GAL4 driver.
Scer\GAL4DBD.elav.T:Zzzz\ZipRREEL and Scer\GAL4AD.Ccap.T:Zzzz\ZipEERRL,T:SV40\nls2 function together as a GAL4 driver and drive reporter expression within the more restricted Ccap pattern, although some expression is seen outside of this pattern in different neurons.
