udd1/udd1 and udd1/uddnull ovaries contain egg chambers only up to stages 4-5 of oogenesis.

Over time udd1 mutant germline stem cell clones induced in female flies become less proliferative and are eventually lost from the cap cell niche.

udd1 partially suppresses the differentiation defects seen in bamΔ86 mutant female germline cells. Many four- and eight-cell cysts with branched fusomes and ring canals are seen, but mature 16 cell cysts are not observed.

The udd1 allele was isolated as a background mutation from the Exelixis stock PBac{WH}CG8232f00130. Excision of the piggyBac transposon did not revert the recessive sterile phenotype.
