Term plasmatocyte ID (Ontology) FBbt:00058145 (Fly Anatomy)
Definition Phagocytic hemocyte. These cells represent about 90% of all hemocytes (Lanot et al., 2001). They are responsible for the engulfment of small particles, microbes and apoptotic tissues debris (Honti et al., 2014) and for the secretion of antimicrobial peptides and opsonins (Cattenoz et al., 2021). They also contribute to the production and secretion of proteins of the hemolymph, along with fat body cells (Cattenoz et al., 2021).
