In BicDr mutants, BicD protein does not localize to the oocyte.

In wild type females, BicD RNA is detected very early in oogenesis in the 16 cystocyte cluster and progressively accumulates in a single cell, the oocyte. In BicDr mutants, BicD RNA does not localized to a single cystocyte, but is found in all of the pro-nurse cells.

Detailed Description

Meiosis is initiated normally in two to four cells in region 2a of the germarium in BicDr homozygous females, but oocyte differentiation is blocked.

Mutant eye discs exhibit an R-cell precursor nucleus migration phenotype.

Fusomes in the cysts of BicDr/BicDR26 ovaries appear to form normally.

Egg chambers of hemizygous females start to degenerate around stage 7.

Embryos exhibit a fused dorsal appendage.

Fusomes are normal.

16-nurse cell phenotype.

No single microtubule organizing center forms in the germaria of hemizygous females, instead several small foci are present. The actin cytoskeleton is unaffected.

Egg chambers have 16 nurse cells and no oocyte. Egg chambers increase in size to stage 6. No chorion is formed.
