Detailed Description

Upon 6 days of exposure to continuous white light, cm1 mutant photoreceptor cells show degenerative features, including a loss of rhabdomeres and disruption of ommatidial organization. cm1 mutant photoreceptor cells exhibit decreased ERG amplitudes.

The glue granules in the salivary gland cells of cm1 mutant third instar larvae are similar in size to wild type.

Mutant flies have reduced red pigment in the eye compared to controls.

Mutant males have a shortened adult life span compared to controls, with a mean life span of 21.97 days at 25o.

Eye colour: darker than wild type. Dramatic reduction in number of secondary and tertiary pigment granules surrounding the ommatidium. Outer rhabdomeres are also occasionally missing.

Eye colour: translucent dark ruby. Eye colour: deep orange, with st1. Eye colour: lighter than bw1, with bw1. Malpighian tubule colour: very pale yellow. RK1.

Overexpression of Vps35Scer\UAS.T:Ivir\HA1 in a Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU wJF01901 background, significantly restores rhabdomere number and suppresses the ERG amplitude defects found in cm1 mutants that have been continuously exposed to white light for 6 days.

Overexpression of Vps26Scer\UAS.T:SV5\V5 in a Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU wJF01901 background, significantly restores rhabdomere number and suppresses the ERG amplitude defects found in cm1 mutants that have been continuously exposed to white light for 6 days.

cm1 is a complex modifier of the eye phenotype caused by expression of bchsEP2299 under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF.
