neurA101 mutant C4da neuronal clones do not exhibit defects in dendrite pruning or neuronal cell death 18-20 hours after puparium formation.

neurA101 clones in the adult notum display tufted bristles as a result of a mild defect in sensory precursor restriction , and subsequent development of supernumerary sensilla with normal cell complements.

Mutants show no obvious mushroom body defect.

Homozygous somatic clones in the notum display an autonomous increase in microchaetae density as well as tufts of microchaetes and macrochaetes. Homozygous somatic clones in the adult wing display an increase in chemosensory bristles and lack most stout mechanosensory organs.

Homozygous somatic clones in the eye produces eyes that contain ommatidia of variable sizes (including many that are larger than normal), frequent tufting of interommatidial bristles, and glazed or scarred regions. Ommatidia contain variable numbers of rhabdomeres and frequent fusion of ommatidial clusters.

Homozygous mutant clones display a bristle tufting phenotype affecting both macrochaetae and microchaetae. The severity of the phenotype ranged from duplicated bristles to tufts containing several bristles. Supernumerary macrochaetae and macrochaetae are always found in characteristically normal positions. Tufting can also be observed with adult head sensillae surrounding the eye and ocelli. In addition, bristle sensilla throughout the body, including the dorsal and ventral abdomen, also appear to form tufts. As is observed for macrochaetae. these tufts always occur in locations where normal bristles are formed. Homozygous mutant clones in the eye can also cause eye defects. producing irregularly shaped ommatidia, mispositioned or extra sensory bristles, severe scarring and defective photoreceptor development. Homozygous mutant clones also cause defects in wing development, including irregular wing margin sensory bristle formation and ectopic wing vein formation.

emcE12/emc11 neurA101 larvae have very low viability.
