Homozygous adults show impaired olfactory ability; the avoidance response to benzaldehyde is reduced compared to wild-type controls. This reduction in avoidance response is sexually dimorphic; homozygous males are hyposmic while homozygous females are anosmic (even at high odorant concentrations). The avoidance response of heterozygous adults to benzaldehyde is indistinguishable from wild type. Homozygous larvae show defects in response to isoamylacetate and benzaldehyde compared to controls. Larval motility in the absence of odour cue is not significantly different between homozygous and wild-type larvae. scribsmi97B/Df(3R)Tl-X adults show reduced avoidance responses to benzaldehyde compared to Df(3R)Tl-X/+ controls and females show significantly more smell impairment than males. scribsmi97B/scrib1 and scribsmi97B/scrib673 adults show a significantly lower avoidance response to benzaldehyde compared to controls. scribsmi97B/scribS042405b adult females show a significantly lower avoidance response to benzaldehyde compared to control females, while the response of scribsmi97B/scribS042405b adult males is not significantly different from that of control males. The avoidance response to benzaldehyde of scribj7B3/scribsmi97B adults is not significantly different from that of controls.

Olfaction defective as measured in a dipstick assay using 1% benzaldehyde.

Avoidance score to benzaldehyde overlaps the avoidance score to water. Shows general hyposmia: avoidance score to 2-n-propylpyrazine and 2-isobutylthiazole is also reduced.

Comments

Precise excision of the P{lArB} element reverts the olfactory deficit seen in scribsmi97B mutants.
