Expression of the E(spl)m5-HLH coding region is governed by UASt regulatory sequences.
When expression is driven by Scer\GAL4hs.PB, with two heat pulses of 45 minutes 8-24hr APF, adult flies display a variety of bristle phenotypes in two categories: bristle organ loss and aberrant bristle structures (e.g. double sockets, split shaft, multiple shafts or stunted/deformed bristle shafts). Earlier heat pulses promote bristle loss, later heat pulses promote aberrant bristles. When expression is driven by Scer\GAL4hs.PB, induced between 8 and 14 hr APF, microchaetae fail to develop. The neurons in the nota are correspondingly reduced or absent.
