Wing hairs in the most anterior region of the wing point towards the anterior margin in mutants, as opposed to distally as in wild type.

Wing margin bristles point out of the wing in fzunspecified mutants, in contrast to wild-type, where they point to the distal end of the wing. Defects in wing hair polarity are seen and a few multiple wing hairs appear.

The abdomen of fzunspecified homozygous flies does not completely lack planar polarity. Dorsally, the only obvious abnormality is dishevelment in the anterior portion of the A compartment with occasional whorls elsewhere, particularly in the front of the P compartment. However, ventrally, the hairs of the pleura lack all anteroposterior bias; in some places they are randomly oriented, in others they point mostly laterally.

Mutant clones in the wing show domineering non-autonomy: cells distal to the clone, as well as within the clone, show alteration of polarity of wing hairs.

Extreme tarsal phenotypes are seen, with complete duplications in T2-T4 and an ectopic joint structure in T1. Somatic clones in the wing cause long-range non-autonomous alteration in the polarity of cells, both distal and lateral to the clone, which tend to point towards the mutant clone.

Most wing cells of homozygous flies form a single hair. Homozygous flies have disruptions in the pattern of wing hair polarity. The prehair initiation site is moved to near the cell centre in pupal wing cells. Double mutants of fzunspecified with in1, fy2 or mwh1 resemble in1, fy2 or mwh1 single mutants respectively.

Clones of stanE59 fzunspecified double mutant cells in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) do not change the cell polarity of their wild-type neighbouring cells.

The reversal of cell polarity that is seen in cells anterior to clones in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are expressing ftScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL is still seen if the clones are induced in a fzunspecified background.

Clones of ftunspecified cells in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) that have been induced in a fzunspecified background can reverse the cell polarity of cells behind the clone (hairs behind the clone point forwards).

The reversal of cell polarity that is seen in cells posterior to clones in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are expressing dsecto.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL is still seen if the clones are induced in a fzunspecified background.

The reversal of cell polarity that is seen in cells posterior to clones in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are expressing dsecto.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL is still seen if the clones are induced in a fzunspecified stan- background (cells within the clone are stanE59/stanE59 while the cells surrounding the clone are stan3/stanE59).

The reversal of cell polarity that is seen in cells anterior to clones in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are expressing ftScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL is still seen if the clones are induced in a fzunspecified stan- background (cells within the clone are stanE59/stanE59 while the cells surrounding the clone are stan3/stanE59).

The reversal of cell polarity phenotype seen in cells posterior to fzunspecified clones in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) shows a longer range if the clones are induced in a dsunspecified background compared to a wild-type background.

Clones of cells in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are mutant for fzunspecified and are also expressing ftScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL result in reversal of cell polarity in cells posterior to the clone when the clone is at the front of the anterior compartment (behaving like fz- clones) and result in reversal of cell polarity in cells anterior to the clone when the clone is at the back of the anterior compartment (behaving like clones expressing ftScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL).

The reversal of cell polarity phenotype that is seen in cells posterior to clones in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are doubly mutant for ptc16 and Df(2R)enE is still seen if the clones are induced in a fzunspecified background, as occurs in clones induced a wild-type background.

Clones of cells in the anterior compartment of the dorsal epidermis of the adult abdomen (in the tergite) where the clones are expressing fzScer\UAS.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL and the clones have been induced in a dsunspecified fzunspecified double mutant background, result in reversal of cell polarity for a single cell distance anterior to the clone.

The effects of overexpression of G-oα47AScer\UAS.cKa are suppressed in fzunspecified homozygous wings. The effects of overexpression of G-oα47AGTP.Scer\UAS are enhanced in fzunspecified homozygous wings.

The frequency of multiple wing hairs induced by expression of G-oα47AScer\UAS.cKa under the control of Scer\GAL4Bx-MS1096 is reduced if the flies also carry fzunspecified.

fzunspecified fz2unspecified double mutant clones induced in the wing disc during the late second or third instar contain significantly fewer cells than their wild-type sister clones. Fragments of DNA, indicative of cell death, are repeatedly seen in cells of the small clones. Clone size is substantially increased in fzunspecified fz2unspecified double mutant clones if they are also expressing BacA\p35Scer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4αTub84B.PL.

Loss of ft function in large or small clones does not alter the characteristic polarity of fzunspecified mutant wings.

The domineering nonautonomy of fzunspecified clones is enhanced by dsUAO71/ds33k.
