        Homozygotes show necrosis of the gut just caudal to the attachment site of the Malpighian tubules. The site of necrosis corresponds to the location of the hindgut imaginal ring. The salivary glands of homozygous larvae are often small with thin polytene chromosomes. Disruption in the endo cycle of the larval ring gland is seen; cells in the ring gland appear to initiate polytenisation but then revert to a mitotic state.
