UASt regulatory sequences drive expression of a bab1 minigene, which consists of a 2.7kb PstI-SalI genomic fragment (starting 6bp upstream of the ATG codon and ending 422bp after the 5' splice site of intron 1) and a 4.5kb BamHI genomic fragment (starting 146bp upstream of the 3' splice site of exon 1 and ending 273bp after the end of the bab1 cDNA).
Expression of bab1Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB results in unpigmented flaccid and wavy macrochaetae on the thorax. Incomplete dorsal closure of the tergites is seen.
Expression of bab1Scer\UAS.cGa under the control of Scer\GAL4bab1-Pgal4-2 partially rescues the mutant leg phenotypes of bab2E4/Df(3L)babAr07 flies; there is no sex comb on tarsal segment 3, tarsal segments 4 and 5 are separated by a well-defined joint but there is a small sex comb on tarsal segment 2 (1-2 bristles). bab2E4/Df(3L)babAr07 females have ovaries of reduced size which contain only a few follicles with abnormal orientation. They are subfertile and lay very few eggs. These defects are partially rescued by bab1Scer\UAS.cGa expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4bab1-Pgal4-2.
