ovoD1rv37 females carrying one copy of ovo-2b have small ovaries, with fewer ovarioles than normal. When egg chambers in these ovaries develop beyond stage 10, degeneration and apoptosis of nurse cells is seen. A few eggs are laid (5-10 per female per day) but they are flaccid. ovoD1rv37 females carrying two copies of ovo-2b contain a higher proportion of egg chambers which develop to maturity, but eggs which are laid fail to develop. ovoD1rv23 females carrying two copies of ovo-2b have ovaries with a variety of defects. Egg chambers in which follicle cells have failed to migrate and degenerating ovarioles are seen. Egg chambers develop to maturity in rare cases, giving rise to short, abnormal eggs which have ventralised eggshells and fused dorsal appendages.
