simj7/simj16 animals survive to the late pupal stage. The pupae appear almost wild-type, but do display a variety of phenotypes, including legs that are bent back, a split notum and folded wings. Some mutants show necrosis near the head region, while others lacks pigmentation and bristles in the abdominal region. Some simjS/simj7 pupae show accumulation of white fluid (possibly due to incomplete histolysis of the fat bodies) which causes the pharate adult to stick to the pupal case.
