    Detailed Description
    Statement
    Reference

Homozygous follicle cell clones show multilayering of cells in 31% of cases and show a flattened cells compared to wild-type cells in 37% of cases.

In sdtK85/+ retinas the photoreceptor cell stalk membrane is shorter than that of wild-type.

sdtK85 photoreceptor cell MARCM clones exhibit an approximate 50% reduction in stalk membrane length.

Photoreceptors in homozygous eye clones show severe defects, including a shortened stalk membrane, and they degenerate when exposed to light. This light-induced degeneration is strongly reduced if the animals are raised and maintained on vitamin A-depleted medium.

    Additional Comments
    Genetic Interactions
    Statement
    Reference

The light dependent retinal degeneration seen in w1118 flies does not depend on sdtK85/+. The rate of photoreceptor cell survival seen in a w1118 genetic background is similar in sdtK85/+ or +/+ flies.

Expression of sdtScer\UAS.H.T:Zzzz\FLAG in outer photoreceptor cells under the control of Scer\GAL4ninaE.PT in sdtK85/+ or +/+ genetic background completely blocked the light induced retinal degeneration in w1118 flies. In addition, the rhabdomeres of the outer Scer\GAL4ninaE.PT-expressing photoreceptor cells are reduced in size in comparison with control flies and flies including flies kept in the dark.

Expression of sdtScer\UAS.D.T:Zzzz\FLAG under the control of Scer\GAL4ninaE.PT enhances the retinal degeneration phenotype in w1118 eyes. When sdtScer\UAS.D.T:Zzzz\FLAG is expressed in a sdtK85/+ background, the decrease in photoreceptor cell survival is stronger.

    Comments

Expression of sdtA.Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG or sdtB2.Scer\UAS.T:Zzzz\FLAG in sdtK85 photoreceptor cell MARCM clones partially restores talk-membrane length to a reduction of only 30% compared with wild-type. This stalk is significantly longer than that in photoreceptor cells mutant for sdtK85, but significantly shorter than stalk-membrane length in control photoreceptor cells.
