Homozygous and spag4⁶/Df(2L)Prl males are sterile, although they court, mount and copulate with females.

salto¹, spag4⁶ double heterozygotes do not show fertility defects, spermatids do not show nuclear shape defects and spermatocytes do not show basal body anchoring defects. Double homozygotes show the same spermatogenesis defects as spag4⁶ single homozygotes (i.e. rare cystic bulges and waste bags).
