Multiple studies have assessed the effects of a high-sugar diet on flies, using larval or adult stages. Phenotypes of type 2 diabetes are observed in animals cultured on a high-sugar diet, including hyperglycemia and insulin resistance; cardiomyopathy (see FBhh0000482) and nephropathy (see FBhh0001117) are also observed. Comparative analyses of gene expression in control animals vs. high-sugar-fed animals has allowed identification of affected genes and pathways. Genes that ameliorate or otherwise modify effects of a high-sugar diet have been identified.
