The reduced amd gene product interferes with catecholamine metabolism.
Mutant embryos exhibit a melanotic ring around the anal organ and at this point they burst by popping the anal organ or by bursting at other locations suggesting a defect in the integrity of the cuticle. The anal organ protrudes from the embryo as the cuticular suture between the anal organ and hypoderm cells is absent.

amd1/amd11 has partially lethal phenotype, suppressible by Df(3L)TP32
amd1/amd6 has partially lethal phenotype, suppressible by Df(3L)TP32
amd1/amd6 and amd1/amd11 transheterozygotes show partial lethality. These flies show a substantial increase in viability if they are also carrying one copy of Df(3L)TP32.
amd5/amd1 or amd6/amd1 flies show an increase in viability when they are also heterozygous for Tcr40 or Tcr45. amd11/amd1 flies show an increase in viability when they are also heterozygous for Tcr40. Complementation between Tcr40 and Tcr45 is not increased by amd1, but amd1 has a maternal effect on Tcr40/Tcr45 embryos, causing an increase in embryonic mortality.
Mutant phenotype can be rescued by two copies of amd+t2.9.
