An insertion in the first intron of bi.
In bi1 hemizygotes, the proximal longitudinal veins in the hinge region are fused into a bifid stalk. The 'bifid' vein-fusion phenotype is temperature-dependent, overlapping with wild-type at 18[o]C and (in males) reaches full penetrance at 25[o]C. Wing size of bi1 hemizygotes is slightly reduced compared to wild type. At least one large ectopic bristle is observed with high penetrance on the ventral side of the distal tip of vein L3 in bi1 adult wings.
bi1 mutant wings exhibit an ectopic furow along the A/P boundary at 25[o]C. This furrow is more pronounced in the strongly hypomorphic bi1/biD4 transheterozygote. Overgrowth also occurs in the anterior ventral pleura region of the wing disc.
Hemizygotes have outspread, crumpled, and very flimsy wings with an extreme bi fusion of the basal regions of the longitudinal wing veins.
Longitudinal veins fused at base of wing into bifid stalk. L3 delta-like at tip; L4 often incomplete at tip. Wing margins often excised at tip of L4. Wings spread in proportion to their shortness. RK1.

High temperature enhances the phenotype and low temperature produces overlapping of wild type. Expression stronger in male than in female.
