Baldspot02281 mutant larvae have impaired C16:0 to C18:0 (stearic acid) elongase activity and reduced C18:0 levels. Flies are able to survive to pupation if the food is supplemented with C18:0 , but not with C18.1 or C20:0 . Removing anti-fungal agents from the food also improves Baldspot02281 mutant survival. Adding sub-lethal concentrations of the mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I inhibitor rotonene (but not other drugs) to this anti-fungal food results in lethality.

Baldspot02281 mutants have impaired mitochondrial respiration and this is rescued by adding C18:0 to the food.

The number of mitochondria in Baldspot02281 mutant larvae is similar to controls, but they are hyper-fragmented. This effect is rescued by C18:0 .

Baldspot02281 mutants display reduced endoplasmic-reticulum-mitochondrial connections and abnormal cristae.
