spn-F1/spn-F1 mutants exhibit abnormal bristle morphology, wherein bristles are short, branched and have a characteristic swollen region.

spn-F1 mutants exhibit shorter and thicker anterior and posterior scutellar macrochaetae. Approximately 29% of spn-F1 mutant bristles exhibit wild-type morphology, in which the shaft diameter is the widest at the bristle base and tapered toward the tip. In most of the mutant fly bristles, the widest shaft diameter is not found at the base of the bristle. Approximately 59% of the mutant bristles exhibit an altered growth direction that is not axially biased and 24% terminate in several minitips instead of a single tip. The middle third of the mutant bristles show moderately disorganized ridges that are shallower and more numerous than the wild-type bristle surface, which is characterized by straight ridges and valleys, suggesting that alterations in actin organization occurs in the mutants during the middle phase of bristle elongation.

Df(3R)BSC793 fails to complement spn-F1 for female sterility.

Females mutant for spn-F1 produce a ventralised eggshell. A fraction of eggs are fertilised and the embryos that form inside have a variety of pattern abnormalities. Apart from ventralised embryos, some bicaudal embryos are found inside the eggs, ranging from embryos with the typical reduced head skeleton, to rare symmetrical bicaudals with several abdominal segments in mirror image symmetry and Filzkoerper and telson at both ends.

spn-F1 and spn-F1/Df(3R)tll-e ventralised eggshells exhibit a variety of phenotypes. The majority of these eggs (approximately 80%) do not have appendages, with smaller percentages exhibiting a single appendage or fusing of the appendages at the base.

Egg shape affected; in extreme cases dorsal appendages are lacking and eggs have little or no dorsal-ventral polarity; some eggs have one fused dorsal appendage. Low fecundity; eggs often slightly collapsed.

Maternal effect mutation similar to spn-A.

spn-F1/spn-F1 does not suppress or enhance the abnormal bristle morphology seen in flies expressing IKKεNIG.2615R under the control of Scer\GAL4sca.PU, and vice versa.

Expression of IKKεScer\UAS.T:Hsap\MYC under the control of Scer\GAL4sca.PU partially suppresses the bristle defects seen in spn-F1/spn-F1 mutants.

Expression of spn-FScer\UAS.FL.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP or spn-FΔ253.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP, but not spn-FΔ212.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP, under the control of Scer\GAL4sca.PU rescues the bristle defects seen in spn-F1/spn-F1 mutants.

Expression of spn-FΔC2.Scer\UAS.T:Avic\GFP-EGFP under the control of Scer\GAL4sca.PU partially rescues the bristle defects seen in spn-F1/spn-F1 mutants.

Expression of spn-FΔC.Scer\UAS.P\T in the germ line, under the control of Scer\GAL4mat.αTub67C.T:Hsim\VP16 failed to rescue spn-F1-induced female sterility.

Expression of spn-F1-162.Scer\UAS.P\T.N.T:Avic\GFP in the germ line, under the control of Scer\GAL4mat.αTub67C.T:Hsim\VP16 failed to rescue spn-F1-induced female sterility.
