The number of corpora cardiaca cells is increased in mutant late stage 17 embryos (110.2 +/- 23.7 cells) compared to wild type (14.0 +/- 0.8 cells). The number of insulin producing cells is reduced in the mutant stage 17 embryos (2.3 +/- 1.7 cells) compared to wild type (12.5 +/- 2.5).

When single cell somatic clones are made in the eye, ommatidia with too many or too few neural cells can be seen. Occasionally ommatidia containing one or more mutant cells differentiate eight photoreceptor cells in the normal arrangement. In these cases each of the R1-R7 photoreceptor cells is able to contribute to a normally constructed ommatidium without Dl. Loss of Dl from R3 leads to an exchange of R3 and R4 fates and chiral reversal, and simultaneous loss of Dl from R1 and R6 leads to R7 adopt a R1/6-like morphology. Mutant R2 and R5 cells are rarely seen, mutant R8 cells are never seen.

Boundary cell differentiation in the hindgut is suppressed in mutant embryos.

Mutants show an increased number of tendon cells at late stages of embryonic development (after muscle binding has occurred) compared to wild type.

Embryos have extra eve-positive mesodermal cells compared to wild-type. No eve-positive mesodermal cells develop in wgunspecified; Dlunspecified double mutants, as in wgunspecified single mutants.

Embryos exhibit a neurogenic phenotype.

Homozygous clones in the wing produce discrete, round blisters of variable size. These blisters can be located anywhere on the wing and are associated with abnormalities in venation. Homozygous clones that include the wing margin cause scalloping due to cell death.

Embryos lacking Dl function, or maternal and zygotic N function, fail to develop principal midgut epithelial cells and no midgut epithelium develops.

Homozygous embryos lack ventral cuticle and show hypertrophy of the ventral nervous system. Heterozygotes show thickening of the wing veins.
