gish1 mutant larvae exhibit a glial cell migration phenotype in the developing eye. Surface glial cells migrate precociously into the eye disc, along the basal surface of the eye disc and in contrast to wild-type, continue to migrate past the morphogenetic furrow (MF) into anterior part of the disc. R cell axons project to the basal surface of the eye disc, as normal, but then turn towards the MF, rather than posteriorly as in wild-type. In all, cases the axons migrate between ectopic glial cells and the basal surface of the eye disc. Adult eyes are smaller than wild-type and often contain a reduced number of ommatidia in the anterior region. Homozygous mutant somatic clones in the eye also give the same phenotypes. Only minor defects are seen MF progression.
