Homozygous embryos have abnormally shaped salivary glands; 40% have elongated, branched lumens, 30% have elongated, expanded lumens, 2% have short, expanded lumens and 28% are normal (elongated, unbranched lumens). The branching is due to defects in the early morphogenetic movements of salivary gland invagination; more cells appear to invaginate than normal. As in wild type, there is no cell proliferation within the salivary glands at all stages of salivary gland formation. Salivary gland cells of mutant embryos have increased apical areas compared to wild type. h22/h674, h25/h674 and hi22/h674 embryos have salivary glands with either branched or expanded lumens.

hkb2 h674 double mutant embryos form salivary glands that are morphologically identical to those of hkb2 single mutants, although there is an increase in salivary glands that fail to internalise (from 0% in the single mutants to 19% in the double mutants).
