Engulfment of nurse cells by follicle cells is largely inhibited in the "undead" egg chambers (egg chambers in which the nurse cell nuclei fail to condense and the follicle cells disappear) of starved flies expressing thScer\UAS.P\T.cPa in the germline under the control of Scer\GAL4nos.PG. Most of the follicle cells fail to enlarge and display thinning out of the membranes. 36% of undead egg chambers show some FC enlargement.

Expression of thScer\UAS.P\T.cPa under the control of both Scer\GAL4nos.PG and Scer\GAL4nos.UTR.T:Hsim\VP16 results in defective egg chambers during mid-oogenesis (stages 7-9), characterised by a lack of follicle cells and the presence of large, uncondensed nurse cell nuclei. Approximately 20% of stage 14 egg chambers show uncondensed, persisting nurse cell nuclei.

The base of the ovaries of starved females expressing thScer\UAS.P\T.cPa under the control of Scer\GAL4nos.UTR.T:Hsim\VP16 is filled with a mass of unhealthy, undead egg chamber tissue, including large uncondensed nurse cell nuclei. Residual egg chambers are devoid of follicle cell nuclei.

Overexpression of thScer\UAS.P\T.cPa with p53Scer\UAS.P\T.cBa, during oogenesis under the control of Scer\GAL4nos.UTR.T:Hsim\VP16 does not suppress the p53Scer\UAS.P\T.cBa-dependent stem cell loss.

thScer\UAS.P\T.cPa can partially suppress the sterility and egg chamber degeneration seen in adult females carrying one copy of P{UASp-Dcp-1.ΔN} and two copies of P{GAL4::VP16-nos.UTR} raised at 25oC. However, the resulting egg chambers sometimes lack follicle cells and/or have extra nurse cells.
