Mutant animals exhibit a distorted eye phenotype with visible rearrangements of the ommatidia lattice and extra bristles. Mutant animals have extra secondary and tertiary pigment cells as well as extra bristle cells. No change is seen in the number of photoreceptor cells. The extra cells distort the regular hexagonal shape of the ommatidia and the general lattice pattern of the retina. When mutant imaginal disc are imagined a 2.13 fold increase in the number of cells in S phase are seen. These cells are seen in the morphogenetic furrow and the area posterior to it.
