Two 665bp fragments from the 5' portion of the coding sequence of the NPFR gene are cloned downstream of UASt sequences as inverted repeats separated by a 619bp spacer.

Expression of NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PU significantly increases ethanol preference in mated males, but not in virgin males.

The memory performance of NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS;Scer\GAL4n-syb.PS flies is impaired. These flies are normal for aversive olfactory conditioning.

Food deprived NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS;Scer\GAL4c061 flies exhibit an impaired appetitive memory.

Expression of NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL80ple.PK or Scer\GAL4c061 in food-deprived flies impairs 3hr appetitive memory performance. Expression of NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS in all Scer\GAL4c061 neurons except the DA neurons (through the presence of Scer\GAL80ple.PK) does not affect appetitive memory.

Mutant animals are significantly more resistant to the sedative effect of ethanol vapour than controls.

Third instar larvae that have fasted for 120 minutes that express NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS, under the control of Scer\GAL4NPFR1.6.6 or in the nervous system (Scer\GAL4elav-C155 or Scer\GAL4Appl.G1a) are deficient in motivated feeding of solid but not liquid food. In contrast, expression of NPFR1dsRNA.Scer\UAS in muscle cells Scer\GAL4Mhc.PW results in normal feeding responses.
