RalaEE1 hemizygous males are almost completely flightless but heterozygous females show normal flight ability.

Ommatidia in adult mutant males have a number of defects, including loss of photoreceptor cells, loss of R3/R4 asymmetry and defects in orientation with respect to the eye equator. In mutant third instar eye discs, many ommatidia rotate either two much or too little and R1 and R6 are frequently absent.

In mosaic ommatidia where both of the R3/R4 pair are Rala[+], the ommatidia are asymmetrical and have normal chirality. In mosaic ommatidia where both of the R3/R4 pair are homozygous, approximately 10% of the ommatidia are symmetrical. In ommatidia where one of the R3/R4 pair is Rala[+] and the other is homozygous, different results are seen depending on which of the R3/R4 precursors is Rala[+]; when the polar cell (pre-R4) is homozygous, all of the ommatidia are wild type, but when the equatorial cell (pre-R3) is homozygous, approximately 7% of the ommatidia are symmetrical and 2% have reversed chirality.

Hemizygous males have rough eyes and bristles on the head and humerus are either missing or severely truncated. The notal bristles and hairs are missing. The wings are short and curved.

Genetic Interactions
Statement
Reference

RalaEE1 dominantly suppresses the rough eye phenotype of lqfFDD9 homozygotes, with a greater proportion of ommatidia containing the normal number of photoreceptor cells in the double mutant flies.

lqfAG dominantly suppresses the rough eye phenotype of RalaEE1/Y adults, with a greater proportion of ommatidia being completely normal in the double mutant flies.

The rough eye phenotype of RalaEE1/Y adults is dominantly enhanced by Dl9P and by neur1.

Expression of either N3.hs.T:Scer\GAL4,T:Hsim\VP16 or N::sevSev11.3.hs.T:Scer\GAL4,T:Hsim\VP16 using heat shock (either 1 or 2 hours) during the third instar larval stage enhances the rough eye phenotype of RalaEE1/Y.
