Expression of belGD1324 driven by Scer\GAL4nos.PG leads to an enlarged hub area, massive loss of germline stem cells (GSCs) and germ cells of successive stages of spermatogenesis in the testes, along with fusome loss or disruption in around 50% of testes; however, maintenance of early somatic and mature cyst cells is similar to controls. Expression of belGD1324 driven by Scer\GAL4nos.PG leads to increased apoptosis in germline cells (but not somatic cyst cells) in the testis compared to controls. Scer\GAL4nos.PG>belGD1324 testes are strongly reduced in size and males are semi-sterile.

Expression of belGD1324 driven by Scer\GAL4tj-NP1624 leads to a complete absence of germ cells in only 5% of testes, with more than half showing an overpopulation of small germ cells (tumor); fusomes and spectrosomes are lost in around 11% of testes.

Expression under the control of Scer\GAL4Mef2.PR results in late larval lethality.

Expression under the control of Scer\GAL4pnr-MD237 results in lethality before the pupal stage.

Co-expression of CycBScer\UAS.cWa and belGD1324 driven by Scer\GAL4nos.PG leads to two distinct phenotypes in testes: most (around 75%) are reduced in size and do not contain germ cells, while the remainder have normal testis architecture and germ cell content; male infertility is significantly partially suppressed by co-expression of CycBScer\UAS.cWa in Scer\GAL4nos.PG>belGD1324 males.
