Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU-mediated expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS significantly reduces viability: only 41% of flies emerge. Lethality is increased at higher temperatures. Lethality is significantly suppressed by addition of an anti-oxidant mix in the diet.

Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1-mediated expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS results in a narrowing of the region flanked by longitudinal veins L3 and L4 in the adult wing. This is caused by a reduction in the number of cells and not a reduction in cell size. The anterior cross vein is reduced/lost in some cases.

The relative amount of mitochondrial DNA in Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU, SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS larvae is not increased compared to controls.

Co-expression of Dcr-2Scer\UAS.cDa intensifies the lethality caused by Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU-mediated expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS : only 4% (rather than 41%) of flies emerge. Lethality is increased at higher temperatures. Lethality is not suppressed by addition of an anti-oxidant mix in the diet.

Scer\GAL4nub-AC-62-mediated co-expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS and Dcr-2Scer\UAS.cDa results in failure of the wing to unfold, though the overall structure of the wing is not compromised.

Co-expression of Dcr-2Scer\UAS.cDa further reduces the narrowing of the region flanked by longitudinal veins L3 and L4 in the adult wing caused by Scer\GAL4ptc-559.1-mediated expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS.

Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU-mediated co-expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS and Dcr-2Scer\UAS.cDa results in local/complete loss of cristae structures in mitochondrial inner membranes and swollen and less electron dense mitochondrial matrixes in larval fat bodies. The relative amount of mitochondrial DNA in these larvae is increased compared to controls: mitochondrial density and average size is increased.

Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU-mediated co-expression of SlimpdsRNA.Scer\UAS and Dcr-2Scer\UAS.cDa results in considerable reduction of mitochondrial respiratory values (normalized by mitochondrial density).
