Overexpression of Sk2Scer\UAS.cYa in the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF leads to extensive photoreceptor degeneration: very few intact ommatidia are seen, rhabdomeres are lost, and cells are vacuolated.
Sk2Scer\UAS.cYa, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF, Scer\GAL80ts.αTub84B photoreceptors that have been raised at a permissive temperature, where Sk2Scer\UAS.cYa expression is inhibited for the first 2 days post eclosion exhibit photoreceptor degeneration after being moved to a non-permissive temperature (where Sk2Scer\UAS.cYa is expressed).

A car1 mutant background suppresses the retinal degeneration seen upon expression of Sk2Scer\UAS.cYa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF in the developing eye through enhanced lysosomal degradation.
CalxB mutant background partially suppresses the degeneration of photoreceptors found when Sk2Scer\UAS.cYa is overexpressed in the developing eye under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF.
