Blockade of DPM neurons (by expressing the temperature sensitive shi^ts.UAS.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4^VT064246 and shifted to the permissive 33[o]C) decreases olfactory medium term memory (1h) when the experiment is carried out in crowded conditions (groups of 32 flies - socially facilitated memory).

Activation of Scer\GAL4^VT64246-expressing dorsal paired medial (DPM) neurons results in an immediate and dramatic increase in sleep. Activating DPMs does not alter the level of locomotor activity during waking periods. The flies are immediately arousable by gentle tapping and have normal geotaxis and locomotion. Upon cessation of activation, flies show reduced sleep.
