Expression of Rcd-1rGD17713 under the control of either Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU or Scer\GAL4tub.PU results in an approximately 70% reduction in male fertility. Female fertility is unaffected.

Expression of Rcd-1rGD17713 in the germline under the control of Scer\GAL4nos.UTR.T:Hsim\VP16 produces male fertility defects, producing approximately 60% of the offspring in controls.

Expression of Rcd-1rGD17713 in the accessory gland under the control of Scer\GAL4Acp26Aa.PC has no effect on male fertility.

Testes from flies expressing Rcd-1rGD17713 under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU show specific defects in structure, including disorganised cysts, tumor formation and/or misoriented sperm bundles. Motile sperm are produced but they either fail to fertilize wild-type female eggs, or the fertilised eggs fail to develop.

Adults expressing Rcd-1rGD17713 under the control of Scer\GAL4elav.PLu (in the presence of Dcr-2Scer\UAS.cDa to increase the efficiency of RNAi) do not show a significant defect in avoidance of noxious temperature (46[o]C) compared to control flies.
