Activation (using Bhal\NaChBacUAS.cNa) of Scer\GAL4SLC5A11.1.1 cells in adults abolishes the significant decrease in preference for nutritive sugars and the significant decrease in preference for food (vinegar) odor seen in fed versus starved flies, compared to controls; this activation also significantly increases food intake of fed or starved flies, compared to controls.

Activation (using TrpA1UAS.(B).cKa at 32[o]C) of Scer\GAL4SLC5A11.1.1 cells in adults abolishes the significant decrease in preference for nutritive sugars seen in fed versus starved flies and significantly increases proboscis extension rate in the absence of food, compared to controls.

Inhibition (using shits.UAS.cUa at 32[o]C) of Scer\GAL4SLC5A11.1.1 cells in adults abolishes the significant increase in preference for nutritive sugars seen in starved versus fed flies, compared to controls.

Inhibition (using Hsap\KCNJ2UAS.cUa.EGFP) of Scer\GAL4SLC5A11.1.1 cells, in combination with a Gal80[ts] transgene to restrict expression to the adult stage, significantly reduces food intake of starved adults, compared to controls; this inhibition also abolishes the significant increase in preference for food (vinegar) odor seen in starved versus fed flies, compared to controls.
