Expression of Fer2miRNA.Scer\UAS.4 under the control of Scer\GAL4Fer2.2359 has no effect on PAM dopaminergic neuron number until 35 days of age. However, at 49 days many flies have fewer PAM neurons compared to control, although this is not significant. Late stage PAM neuron loss is also seen when Fer2miRNA.Scer\UAS.4 is expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4Ddc.HL9 and is significant under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR58E02. The PAL neurons are unaffected.

Expression of Fer2miRNA.Scer\UAS.4 in PAM neurons under the control of Scer\GAL4Ddc.HL9 results in a significant decline in climbing ability after 49 days.

The majority of visible mitochondria in the cell bodies of remaining PAM neurons flies expressing Fer2miRNA.Scer\UAS.4 under the control of Scer\GAL4Ddc.HL9 are in enlarged aggregations and do not form tubular networks as in the control flies. The mitochondria in Trh-positive serotonergic neurons are indistinguishable from controls.
