Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PI in clones results in melanotic tumours in third instar larvae.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E results in dramatic vein loss in the wing.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH, Scer\GAL4elav.PLu, Scer\GAL4GMR.PF or Scer\GAL4dpp.blk1 results in flies with enlarged eyes.

In hopScer\UAS.cHa mutants (when driven by Scer\GAL4hs.PB) the tracheal pits are larger than in wild-type. The hindgut is also longer than seen in wild-type. The hindgut nuclei in mutants form a single layer and are further apart from each other, giving the appearance of being stretched. The peripheral nervous system of mutants differentiate and grow axons prematurely - the PNS is nearly fully differentiated at stage 12 (as compared to 15 in wild-type).

Ectopic border cells form in somatic clones of hopScer\UAS.cHa; Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP cells. These cell may or may not migrate. Compared with the wild-type, presumptive centripetal cells in hopScer\UAS.cHa; Scer\GAL4Act5C.PP clones are morphologically abnormal and do not express a centripetal a cell-specific marker.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4slbo.2.6 results in aberrant migration of the border follicle cells.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4Dot.PK results in melanotic tumours in larvae (tumour production is typically less severe than seen in hopTum animals) and some survive as tumourous adults.

When hopScer\UAS.cHa is driven by Scer\GAL4c306, there is a dramatic increase in the number of border cells compared to wild-type. Up to 90 (slbo expressing) border cells are produced, about 60 of which invade the nurse cell cluster and 20 of which have completed migration by early stage 10.

A single heat shock for 10 minutes during second or third instar larval development is sufficient to produce melanotic masses within larvae and pupae and cause death. Rapid growth, invasiveness and lethality associated with the unduced tumours indicates that overexpression of hop leads to malignant neoplasia indistinguishable from hopTum mutants. Larvae also have hypertrophied lymph glands. Adult pattern defects can be caused by Scer\GAL4 induced hop overexpression.

The loss of wing veins caused by expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E is suppressed by co-expression of Socs44AScer\UAS.cRa.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH rescues the small eye phenotype of Df(1)os1 mutant flies.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH partially rescues the small eye phenotype of osunspecified/Df(1)os1A2 flies.

Coexpression of Socs36EScer\UAS.P\T.cCa and hopScer\UAS.cHa, under the control of Scer\GAL4en-e16E, partially suppresses the lethality of hopScer\UAS.cHa-expressing flies. This coexpression results in the full restoration of the anterior crossvein, which is lost in Socs36EScer\UAS.P\T.cCa-expressing flies.

Expression of hopScer\UAS.cHa under the control of Scer\GAL4mat.αTub67C.T:Hsim\VP16 rescues the germ-band extension and apical cell shape defects observed in hop2 germ-line clones.
