The deletion breakpoint is within the γ1 exon of the Eip63E gene.
The ecdysone induced 63E late puff is not activated in Eip63EE1 polytene chromosomes. The Eip63EE1/Eip63EGN50 combination shows a heterogeneous lethal phase, with the majority of mutant animals dying during larval development and a small percentage living to pupation with an occasional adult escaper. The few Eip63EE1/Eip63EGN50 animals that survive past larval stages, exhibit a small pupa phenotype. They range in size from about 1/3 to 2/3 of wild-type size and also take 2-3 days longer than their heterozygous siblings to reach pupariation.
