hbs361/Df animals the number of stellate cells is significantly reduced, while the number of principal Malpighian tubules (MpTs) is unaltered. The physiological activity of MpTs is compromised. The response to cAMP stimulation is not significantly altered but the ability of MpTs to meet the additional challenge imposed by leucokinin (LK-1) stimulation is markedly reduced. This phenotype appears to be closely correlated with the number of stellate cells present.
