Expression of CG42383Scer\UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB during the pupal stage using 6 pulses of 45 minutes heat shock starting at 30% pupal development (p.d.) results in adult flies with approximately 23% of ommatidia having abnormal contacts between rhabdomeres. More severe defects are seen when heat shocks are continued into later pupal stages; rhabdomeres show abnormal adhesions and their size is reduced in almost all photoreceptor cells.

Expression of CG42383Scer\UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB using three 1 hour heat shocks (separated by 5 hours recovery) starting at 70% p.d. results in abundant endoplasmic reticulum accumulation (the cells contain more ER stacks than normal) in the photoreceptor cell cytoplasm.

Expression of CG42383Scer\UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF results in flies with abnormal contacts between rhabdomeres.

Expression of eycScer\UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB rescues the lethality of eycl20, eycl27 or Df(2R)eyc-l39 flies, even in the absence of heat shock. The rescued flies hold their wings at an abnormal, droopy angle and are less active than wild type.

The homozygous lethality of the Df(2R)eyc-l20, Df(2R)eyc-l27 and Df(2R)eyc-l39 chromosomes is rescued by expression of CG42383Scer\UAS.cSa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.PB (in the absence of heat shock), suggesting that the lethality may be due to an effect on CG42383 in each case. The rescued flies hold their wings at an abnormal, droopy angle and are less active than wild type.
