Detailed Description

Adult flies overexpressing Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C exhibit no apparent phenotype under adequate dietary iron. In contrast, female flies that develop and are maintained throughout their lifespan on food containing 0.2mM iron chelator (BPS-bathophenanthroline disulfonic acid) exhibit a 25% decrease in their mean life span. This phenotype is negligible in male flies. Expression of Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa (under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C) confers a robust protection from paraquat toxicity in young adult female flies.

Expression of Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4ninaE.PT significantly rescues the neurodegeneration and electrophysiology defect seen in fh1 mutant photoreceptor clones when flies are raised in the dark.

Expression of Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa partially suppresses the reduction in lifespan seen in flies expressing fhdsRNA.Scer\UAS.cLa under the control of Scer\GAL4Act5C.PU when fed either normal food or food supplemented with iron. The reduced aconitase levels are not restored by Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa.

Expression of Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa under the control of Scer\GAL4ple.PF significantly rescues the defects in mitochondrial morphology which are seen in the dopaminergic neurons in Pink1B9 adults.

Co-expression of Fer3HCHScer\UAS.cMa partially suppresses the defects in mitochondria morphology seen in the dopaminergic neurons of animals NDUFA8GD16787 under the control of Scer\GAL4ple.PF.
