SLC5A11EY21708 mutant adults lack the significant increase in activity of ellipsoid body R4 neurons and the significant increase in preference for nutritive sugars seen in starved versus fed flies, compared to controls; these, SLC5A11EY21708/Df(2L)BSC228 and SLC5A11EY21708/Df(2L)BSC229 flies also lack the significant increase in preference for food (vinegar) odor seen in starved versus fed flies, compared to controls.
Homozygous flies show defects in taste-independent nutrient selection. They fail to show the wild-type preference of D-glucose (nutritive sugar) over L-glucose (non-metabolizable sugar) in a two choice assay when starved. The mutant instead chooses based on the palatability alone: when D-glucose is more concentrated, and presumably sweeter the mutant prefers D-glucose to L-glucose, and conversely, when L-glucose is more concentrated, the flies choose L-glucose over D-glucose. SLC5A11EY21708/SLC5A11UY1824, SLC5A11EY21708/Df(2L)BSC228 and SLC5A11EY21708/Df(2L)BSC229 flies show the same defect in taste-independent nutrient selection.
Homozygous flies also fail to show the the normal preference for sorbitol, trehalose and galactose which is seen in wild-type flies in a two choice assay when starved.
