UASt regulatory sequences drive expression of smo coding sequences which contain a deletion from the 977th codon to the end of the smo ORF. This removes the region of smo that interacts with fu.

      Overexpression of smoΔFU.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4Bx-MS1096 induces strong wing defects characterised by numerous extra cross-veins and ectopic longitudinal vein (LV) 3 vein tissue with extra campaniform sensillar in the anterior compartment. When the wing patterning is not too severely disturbed, an enlargement of the LV3-LV4 wing cell is also observed. The more severely affected flies do not emerge and the wings of dissected imago are almost circular with the anterior region invaded by vein tissue.
