71% of larpS003108/larpmtr-null females are sterile.
Eggs laid by larpS003108/larpmtr-null females show a number of defects during syncytial divisions, including chains of linked spindles, free centrosomes, multipolar spindles, chromosome segregation defects and a loss of synchrony throughout the syncytial divisions.
35.4% of homozygous spermatocytes show defects in meiosis.
42.0% of onion stage spermatids show abnormalities in larpmtrw males. Of these abnormal cells, 38.3% show abnormal cell numbers or size, 34.9% have abnormal Nebenkern numbers or size, 26.8% show a failure of cytokinesis and 38.1% have multiple abnormalities.
Mutants males show defects in spindle pole organisation in meiotic cells; abnormal cells are often seen in which a subset of spindle microtubules are not connected to spindle poles and fail to orient along the spindle axis at metaphase. Microtubules around the spindle poles appear not to be focused on the poles and there is a loss of centrosome integrity. The central spindle fails to form in some telophase cells, leading to a failure in cytokinesis. Some figures are seen where a chromosome mass is dislocated from a cytoplasmic space between poles.
The distribution of mitochondria during meiotic division is significantly affected in mutant males compared to wild type. In the mutant males, the mitochondria do not move into an interior region at anaphase and the mitochondria are sometimes partitioned unevenly during cytokinesis.
